Robert had a problem. 

He had too many certifications and not enough experience to back them all up. How could he gain the relevant hands-on experience and prove that he was more than book-smart? Did something like that even exist? Robert started to wonder about his future. 

And then he saw an ad for our Cyber Security training — a metaphorical lightbulb went off, and his way became clear.

The hybrid nature of NexGenT — being both online and providing flexibility while also providing a structure and schedule to follow — fit perfectly into Robert’s plan and made him wish the other programs he’d participated in had been that way, too.

Robert has been passionate about computers since he was in elementary school. From the age of 7, he dedicated his time and energy to learning the ins and outs of hardware and software. By the age of 18, he’d built a custom personal computer and was ready to tackle more specific fields in tech. 

Now, if a recruiter asked him what experience he has, he can say “400 hours of labs breaking into multiple machines.” and know that each of those exercises helped shape him into the Network Engineer he is today. 

Robert works hard putting out fires, testing equipment, and wearing multiple hats in his new position. He uses what he’s learned in our Cyber Security program daily.

“I didn’t think I’d get the job because I didn’t have the right amount of experience.” 

His background with NexGenT, certifications, and dedication earned him the position, and he’s poised to continue to grow. “Make sure you backup your certifications with hands-on experience,” says Robert. 

Robert had entered NexGenT, having heard of tools and systems like WireShark, but never having used them. He graduated familiar with the tools he’d be working with daily.

“It’s always more complicated than the book makes it sound.” he continued. There’s no substitute for getting your hands dirty and jumping in headfirst.

“Thanks to NexGenT, I’ve got the knowledge to back up my security plus certification.”
